Only in America

Posted by PJ Levingston on January 22, 2009

Yesterday was an awesome moment in the history of the world! A man who would not be allowed membership in some elite country clubs in Americas south, was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. The great philosopher Don King was right “only in America”. Only in America could an African-American family move into a mansion that was built by African slaves. Only in America could a former State Senator beat a former 1st lady for the Democratic nomination, only in America could the son of an African immigrant with a Muslim name defeat a war hero for the office of President of the United States during a time of war against Islamic terrorist!
The election of Barrack Obama will forever change the way I look at my life! The next time I am up against a trouble that seems unconquerable. I will just say two words “Black President”! The next time I hear someone saying that they are a victim of circumstances, “Black President”! The next time I hear someone says that our public schools systems are hopeless, “Black President”! The next time I hear the words glass ceiling, I will say “Black President”! I am in no way trying to down play all of those things. But we can not forget about this country’s undisputed history of deep racial issues, this is the same country that allowed slavery, segregation, black face, separate but equal, The Tuskegee Experiment ! If Americans can move past all of that, and elect a man based not on the color of his skin, but by the content of his character, then truly anything is possible!

I completely agree with your sentiment. It is like I told my wife (upon Obama’s election; pre-inauguration)….I can finally tell our kids that they can truly be ANYTHING they want to be in life. There is no “asterisk” on that statement any more. On top of that, there can be NO MORE EXCUSES for any of us: Black, White, Latino, etc. There has been an absolute SHIFT in the direction of this country. Whether Obama was “your man” or not, the people have spoken.

Great post. Regardless of your politics this achievement should be recognized as the great yardstick by which we as a nation can measure our progress. Of course we still have a long way to go, but this proves that people can change, and that peace might just be possible.
